From Production to Partnership: The Community Impact of Come Fall In Love
Ashleagh Williams, Sales & Development Manager at Palace Theatre & Opera House, shares an update on the impact and ongoing legacy of Come Fall In Love, which made its UK premiere at the Manchester Opera House in May 2025 with support from Manchester Accommodation BID's Consumer Events Fund.
When Come Fall In Love arrived at Manchester Opera House as part of the Manchester Gets It First programme, it represented an exciting new production for audiences across the city.
What we didn't fully anticipate was the scale of the community impact it would create beyond the stage itself.
Thanks in part to support from Manchester Accommodation BID's Consumer Events Fund, Manchester Opera House and Palace Theatre Manchester were able to develop a programme of activity designed to connect with South Asian communities across Greater Manchester, creating opportunities for engagement, networking and cultural celebration.
From the outset, our ambition was simple: to ensure that the production was not just something people came to watch, but something communities could actively participate in and help shape.
Working alongside partners including Dishoom Manchester, the Consul General of India and community stakeholders from across the region, we created opportunities for people to engage directly with the venue through theatre tours, networking events and informal community conversations.
The response was overwhelming.
Across four exclusive behind-the-scenes tours, around 80 individuals visited the venue, with an extraordinary 95% experiencing a theatre for the very first time. For many participants, the experience transformed perceptions of what a theatre could be and who it was for. Attendees described the visits as "eye-opening" and "inspiring", whilst social media activity generated valuable organic reach within communities that had previously been largely untapped by the venue.
Importantly, the impact extended beyond engagement alone. Numbers of participants went on to purchase tickets for future productions, demonstrating how meaningful community outreach can also contribute to long-term audience development and commercial growth.
Strengthening Business Relationships
Alongside community-facing activity, Come Fall In Love also provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships with Manchester's business community.
A dedicated networking event reached full capacity almost immediately, with many attendees discovering for the first time the breadth of facilities available within Manchester Opera House. Conversations around venue hire, hospitality, sponsorship and future collaboration created valuable opportunities for ongoing partnerships and future revenue generation.
The project also benefited from targeted coverage within Asian media, helping to amplify the message of inclusion and accessibility while reinforcing the venue's commitment to engaging with diverse audiences across Greater Manchester. This visibility helped build trust and confidence amongst communities that have historically been underrepresented within arts audiences.
The legacy of Come Fall In Love
Perhaps the most significant outcome, however, was the legacy.
What began as engagement activity around a single production evolved into something much bigger. The relationships developed through Come Fall In Love have continued to grow long after the final performance concluded. New partnerships were established, conversations continued and community organisations remained actively engaged with the venue.
The project demonstrated what can happen when cultural institutions work collaboratively with local communities and partners to create welcoming and accessible spaces.
Reflecting on the programme, one thing became clear: there is significant demand for cultural experiences that genuinely connect with Manchester's diverse communities. The success of the project highlighted opportunities not only to increase audience participation, but also to strengthen community relationships, support local businesses and reinforce Manchester's reputation as an inclusive and culturally vibrant city.
The impact of Come Fall In Love continues to be felt today and has directly influenced the development of future community engagement initiatives across Manchester Opera House and Palace Theatre Manchester.
We remain incredibly grateful to Manchester Accommodation BID for its support through the Consumer Events Fund, which helped create opportunities, build new relationships and lay the foundations for work that continues to evolve today.
